I was reading Sky new's article (also where I got the pic) about the Katy Perry and Elmo situation that went down yesterday. Apparently I am a day late (by choice, I wasn't going to weigh in but then I SAW the "dress") on all this but I'm going to have to agree with pulling the segment. Normally, I wouldn't because it's a pop star who isn't famous for her brain... However, this is pre-schooler television and a lot happens to children developmentally between birth and the age of five. Most of their personality is formed within those years. (So if your child is a total brat at 3, you better step up before that 5th birthday or your kid is screwed.) Before you start in on your, pardon my french but this is the only way to put it, BULLSHIT, remember I am no prude. Not by a long shot.
Russell Brand, Katy's man, joked that it was her breast size that made all this go down. Nice try but bigger breasted women have been on the show. 34D in this day, among Hollywood elite, isn't that big. That "dress" is so low cut, it's hard to imagine it being appropriate for a children's educational program for anyone. Celebrity guests don't have to change who they are for a kids show, but I certainly have seen Katy Perry much more covered up before. What prompted her to wear one of the more revealing dresses I have seen her in for a kid's show? Furthermore, why did Sesame allow it?
Here's the reasons it's totally inappropriate:
1. Influence. Little girls are highly influential and tend to want to emulate their role models. I don't think I would want my little girl (this is one of the reasons I didn't want one btw) thinking that pretty girls show skin. You can be pretty without wearing what equates to a tiny scrap of fabric over your nipples. Katy obviously has a need for validation or perhaps a self esteem issue. Because I've seen Katy wear some adorable styles that DON'T show all that skin. This was highly inappropriate. Not everything should be sex, sex, sex.
2. Can't we WAIT at least until our children can form a coherent thought before we ram sex into their brains? For all that "concern" everyone seems to have on over-sexed kids, teen pregnancy, and STD's, they don't seem to really do anything about it. Katy couldn't wear a simple screen tee and leggings with ballet flats to teach kids? Let me put it to you this way. How would you feel if your child's elementary school teacher wore something that revealing to class? Shouldn't Katy have put the focus on education and not her breasts? I guess that's why she isn't an intellectual.
3. This to me, borderlines on a sick sexual problem. If I were going on a television show aired for children, I would not want to expose that much of myself (believe me, only double sided tape is preventing her from major nip-slip). Nor should anyone. Yes, yes, in Europe there's nudity on television. Please send me an example of nudity on CHILDREN's programming. That's the difference. There's a place for nudity. HBO, Skinamax, MTV, whatever. That programming isn't intended for young children, therefore, I don't really care what's on it. But we have laws against exposing yourself to children. I don't think it's cute or cool to get as close as you can to breaking it.
Again, I know I am going to burn for this, but I think Katy Perry is in the wrong. Also, given that she couldn't cover her boobs up for one kid's television appearance, I think perhaps she has a self esteem issue. Perhaps she feel she must compensate by showing her assets because she doesn't feel other parts of her are pretty. Nothing good lighting couldn't fix. Katy isn't the most beautiful face I've seen, but I doubt most people would say she's hideous. It's pretty sad that the time when it's most important to be modest and a good example, Katy Perry couldn't come through. Pity, because I liked her music...
